Historic label sought for home

December 15, 2018

A home associated with the Centlivre brewery family will be considered for designation as a local historic district Monday.

At its 5:30 p.m. meeting, the Fort Wayne Historic Preservation Commission will review an application for the properties at 2417 and 2419 Spy Run Ave., including a Victorian-era, Queen Anne-style mansion known as the Charles F. and Mollie Centlivre House.

The showy and substantial home was designed by famed architects Wing & Mahurin, who also designed the John H. Bass Mansion, now known as Brookside on the campus of the University of Saint Francis, and Fort Wayne’s former City Hall, now The History Center.

The house is one of the properties’ three surviving buildings associated with the C.L. Centlivre Brewing Co. Local historians call the brewery “one of Fort Wayne’s important and iconic industries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries” in documents with the application.

The designation is sought by owners N&M Centlivre LLC and its agent, Marianne Centlivre.

The home was built in 1886. The grounds, just north of East State Boulevard, are also occupied by an oversized carriage house, likely used as part of the brewery operation, possibly for horses, and an 11-bay garage for delivery trucks.

The house has decorative eaves, a high-hipped roof, gables and corbels and a high, pyramid-shaped roof : all characteristic of its era and style. The home displays good structural integrity, with the exception of a front porch that was enlarged and later removed, local historians found.

Connie Haas Zuber, executive director of ARCH, Fort Wayne’s nonprofit historic preservation association, said it supports the application.

However, the association was not involved in submitting the application to the commission, she said.

A property in a local historic district may not be torn down or moved or have its exterior significantly altered. Historic districts must be approved by the City Council after being approved by the preservation commission.

The commission will meet in the Omni Room in the lower level of Citizens Square.
