Correction: Recycling Plant Fire story

August 23, 2019

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) — In a story Aug. 21 about a fire at a recycling plant in Massachusetts, The Associated Press misidentified the facility’s operator. The plant is operated by Thomson Brothers Industries, not RecyclingWorks Massachusetts.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Firefighters battle large blaze at recycling plant

Firefighters are continuing to tamp down a large overnight fire at a waste recycling plant in North Andover

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) — Firefighters are continuing to tamp down a large overnight fire at a waste recycling plant in North Andover.

The fire at the Thomson Brothers Industries facility started around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and burned through the night with thick, heavy smoke seen for miles.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze but say the building will likely have to be demolished.

They say the fire was complicated by a limited water supply in the area, and heavy debris and other combustible materials piled inside the facility, which collects plastics, electronics and other waste from commercial companies.

No evacuations were ordered, but local officials advised residents to close their windows, stay indoors and turn off air conditioners. The state’s Department of Environmental Protection is expected to conduct air quality monitoring tests.
