North Carolina settles lawsuit by former firefighter

December 19, 2017

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina town has settled a lawsuit by an ex-firefighter who said he was denied documents needed to appeal his firing.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported Kernersville settled a federal lawsuit for more than $160,000 that was filed by Kevin Bray. Bray was fired in 2015. His lawsuit said Kernersville Town Manager Curtis Swisher refused to give him clear documents that Bray said formed the basis for his termination. Bray said he was provided documents only with names blacked out.

He had been with the fire department for more than 17 years and was promoted to captain in 2010.

Bray says he thinks he was fired for raising health and safety concerns.

Swisher said in the termination letter Bray was fired for violating the town’s personnel policy by causing strife.
