Prosecutors charge New Mexico stepmother in boy’s death
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico prosecutors have charged a woman in the death of her stepson after doctors found marks around his neck and other injuries on his body after he was taken to a hospital.
Santa Fe County District Attorney Marco Serna said he was charging Melynie Tyalan Curtis with child abuse resulting in death.
The 5-year-old boy was pronounced dead early Tuesday at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. He had been there since Saturday.
The child’s injuries included bruises on his buttocks, injuries that appeared to be from a belt, ligature marks around his neck and a bloody and possibly fractured nose.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Curtis had an attorney.
Serna called the abuse horrific and said he would request that Curtis be held without bond pending trail.
