FORMER FIRST LADY LAURA BUSH’S MOTHER DIES IN TEXAS AT 99
MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — Jenna Welch, the mother of former first lady Laura Bush, has died in Texas. She was 99.
Granddaughter and namesake Jenna Bush Hager said Monday on NBC’s “Today” show that Welch, a longtime Midland, Texas, resident, died Friday. The “Today” co-anchor said her grandmother loved nature and “taught us every star in the sky.”
Laura Bush in an Instagram post called her mother “a true daughter of West Texas who loved her family, books, and nature.” An obituary in the Midland Reporter-Telegram said the family held a funeral Saturday in Midland.
Born on July 24, 1919, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Welch was raised near El Paso, Texas. She and her husband, Harold Welch, moved to Midland in 1946 after he returned from serving in World War II. Harold Welch died in 1995.
SUPREME COURT REJECTS APPEAL OVER ROSA PARKS COAT
DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear a dispute over a coat that belonged to civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks.
The court rejected an appeal Monday. A lawyer for the trustee of Parks’ estate says relatives reneged on a deal to turn over a wool coat that Parks wore when she was arrested on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus in 1955. But a niece insists she doesn’t have the coat.
Steven Cohen turned to the Supreme Court after exhausting appeals in Michigan courts. Despite the loss, he predicts the “controversy will continue.”
In 2014, the foundation of philanthropist Howard Buffett purchased hundreds of Parks’ personal belongings for $4.5 million, without the coat. Cohen says Buffett subsequently donated them to the Library of Congress. Parks died in 2005.
NOISY GEYSER IN YELLOWSTONE ROARS BACK TO LIFE AFTER 3 YEARS OF QUIET
NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — A noisy geyser in Yellowstone National Park has roared back to life after three years of quiet.
Ledge Geyser is one of the biggest in Yellowstone’s Norris Geyser Basin.
The Billings Gazette reports the geyser shoots hot water at an angle up to 125 feet (38 meters) high and a distance of 220 feet (67 meters).
Yellowstone geologist Jeff Hungerford says Ledge Geyser is noisy because its water and steam must pass through a narrow opening in the ground.
Yellowstone has 1,300 thermal features and 500 geysers, more than anywhere else on Earth. Some geysers such as Old Faithful are predictable but most, like Ledge Geyser, erupt erratically.
HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR, FORMER SOLDIER HAVE EMOTIONAL MEETING
COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A Holocaust survivor welcomed to her suburban Detroit home a former soldier whose U.S. Army unit liberated the German concentration camp where she was being held.
Sophie Tajch Klisman (SOH’-fee TIHK’ KLIS’-mehn) on Monday greeted Doug Harvey with a hug and thanked the 95-year-old for taking part in the 1945 liberation of the Salzwedel camp, telling him: “You gave me my life.”
Harvey said he “can’t take credit for the entire 15,000 guys in” his 84th Infantry Division, to which Klisman replied: “But you were one of them ... and I’m very fortunate to meet you.”
The two then went inside the 89-year-old Klisman’s house in Commerce Township and chatted with reporters about their experiences during World War II.
Harvey, of nearby Sterling Heights, learned about Klisman, who is from Poland, while reading a recent article about her in a newspaper.
