WASHINGTON (AP) _ Kerry Kennedy Cuomo and Andrew Cuomo, offspring of two prominent Democratic families, have become parents of twin girls.

Cara Ethel Kennedy Cuomo and Mariah Matilda Kennedy Cuomo were born Wednesday evening at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, said spokesman Ken Sunshine.

Cara Ethel, named for her maternal grandmother, Ethel Kennedy, weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces. Mariah Matilda, named for Cuomo's mother, Matilda Cuomo, weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces.

The babies are the first children for the couple, who married in 1990.

Kerry Cuomo, 34, is a daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. She is executive director of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights.

Andrew Cuomo, 36, is a son of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo. He is an assistant secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
