LOWELL -- The suspect in a Sunday morning shooting downtown has been arrested in Lawrence.

Lowell police said Dwayne Johnson, 26, of Haverhill, was arrested about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday at 10 Alden Court, Lawrence.

Johnson will be charged with armed assault with intent to murder.

Johnson is accused of shooting a 24-year-old Haverhill man in the area of Middle and Palmer streets about 2:20 a.m. on Sunday.

Police said the victim and friends were leaving a downtown restaurant when they crossed paths with Johnson. “The victim and suspect appeared to have a history and were going to have an altercation when the suspect took out a gun and shot the victim once in the abdomen,” police said.

A gun was found in a nearby alley, police said.

The victim, who was shot once, was flown by MedFlight to a Boston-area hospital, where he remains in serious condition, police say.

Johnson was arraigned in Lowell District Court on Wednesday, according to an email from Elizabeth Vlock, a spokesperson for the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

She stated Judge Daniel Crane ordered Johnson held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, scheduled to take place Oct. 16.
