Asian player of year Al Shamrani awaits 8-match ban appeal
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Asian soccer player of the year Nassir Al Shamrani is awaiting a verdict after appealing his 8-match Asian Champions League ban.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport says a ruling is expected before Al Shamrani’s club, Al Hilal, plays a group match at Lokomotiv Tashkent on Tuesday.
The Asian Football Confederation banned the Saudi Arabia forward for head-butting and spitting at Western Sydney Wanderers defender Matthew Spiranovic after losing last season’s final in November.
Al Shamrani was named the AFC’s best player of 2014 several weeks later.
The 31-year-old forward has served two matches of the ban. CAS then froze the sanction last month, allowing Al Shamrani to play in this season’s group stage pending the verdict.
The hearing was held Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
