Democrats forced a speedup in the counting of disputed ballots in Miami-Dade County on Wednesday in hopes of boosting Al Gore’s vote totals in Florida’s contested presidential election, triggering a furious protest by George W. Bush’s supporters.

The furor broke out as Bush’s running mate Dick Cheney was hospitalized in Washington for chest pains.
