NEW YORK (AP) _ Charles Jones scored a school record 53 points and Long Island University beat Division III Medgar Evers 179-62, breaking the NCAA record for margin of victory.
The 117-point difference eclipsed the mark of 97 set by Southern University in a 154-57 victory over Patten on Nov. 26, 1993.
Jones, the leading scorer in Division I last season, made 21-of-27 shots as the Blackbirds set an NCAA record by making 76 field goals. LIU also set a record with 39 steals.
Richie Parker added 26 points for LIU (2-2) and Karee Anderson added 25.
The Blackbirds, who shot 61 percent from the field, opened with a 33-9 run in the first 10 minutes.
Billy Clark had 18 points for the Cougars (1-2), who trailed 81-30 at halftime.
