Police: Inmate charged in cellmate’s death feared assault

September 5, 2018

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia police are investigating the death of a jail inmate in Charleston who was beaten in his cell and later found dead.

Authorities say 51-year-old Jeffrey Craig was found dead inside his cell at the South Regional Jail Monday. Craig’s cell mate, Nathan Smith, was arraigned Monday night on a charge of first-degree murder.

WCHS-TV reports that the two had fought in the cell just days before.

West Virginia State Police senior trooper Tiffani Huffman says Smith told police that Craig had “weird eyes.” Huffman says Smith told authorities he was nervous around the victim and thought he was going to be sexually assaulted.

Investigators are waiting on autopsy results but believe the attack happened sometime between midnight and 3 a.m.
