More candidates file for school board seats in Florence districts

August 7, 2018

FLORENCE, S.C. – At least five more people have filed to run in the Nov. 6 school board elections.

Four of the candidates are in Florence County School District 3 and one is in Florence County School District 1.

Brian Huckabee, director of communications for Florence County School District 3, said that, as of 2:35 p.m. on Monday, four people had filed to run for election to the school board. Mattie Thomas has signed up to run for Seat 4B.

Incumbents Almeta E. Fleming (Seat 1), Paula M. Morris (Seat 6), and Johnice Williams (Seat 7B) are also signed up to run.

No one has yet filed to run for Seat 2 or 3 as of Monday afternoon.

Although Florence County School District 3 is subdivided into seven districts, two of the districts, Districts 4 and 7, elect two board members because of the population contained in those districts. Those members are elected in alternating election cycles. Seats 4A and 7A will be up for election in 2020 along with Seat 5.

On Aug. 1, Artie Buxton filed to run in the special election for the Florence County School District 1 Board of Trustees seat that was previously held by Glenn Odom, who resigned last year. The seat represents District 5 of the Florence County School District 1.

The term for Seat 5 expires in 2020.

Seats 3, 6, 8, and 9 on the Florence School District 1 Board of Trustees are also up for election to four year terms on Nov. 6.

Incumbent Trisha Caulder has filed to run to retain Seat 6, Charles Foxe has filed to run for Seat 3, Hannah Parker and Terry Law Sr. have filed to run for Seat 8, and Kelvin Mitchell has filed to run for Seat 9.

Filing for the school board elections will run until noon on Aug. 15.
