WESTCONN ROUNDUP Samuel’s 29 points propel Colonials
DANBURY — Senior forward Aaron Samuel scored 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University men’s basketball team to a 109-81 victory over Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.
WestConn (16-9, 10-6 Little East) previously secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming LEC Postseason Championship Tournament. The Colonials will host No. 5 UMass-Boston in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Seniors Geary McLeod and Eli Rodriguez finished with 15 and 12 points, respectively for the Colonials. Rashard Rodriguez added nine points and nine rebounds.
Junior guard Jayvon Pitts-Young led Southern Maine (6-19, 3-13) with 15 points, six assists and six steals. Seniors Christian McCue and Sean Jany added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Colonials shot 52.7 percent (39-of-74) and outrebounded the Huskies 52-35. WestConn scored 25 points off turnovers.
WestConn led from wire-to-wire, opening the game with an 11-5 run. The Colonials extended the advantage to 56-34 at the break when Geary McLeod sank a jumper.
DANBURY — Seniors Tashai Price and Jancy Sherwood closed out their collegiate careers as the Colonials lost to Southern Maine 89-69.
Sherwood and sophomore Asiah Knight led the Colonials with 13 points apiece, while Gabrielle Hurlburt added eight points.
Genesis Torres had six assists and three steals for WestConn (11-14, 5-11).
The Huskies (15-10, 11-5), were led by sophomore reserve guard Kristen Curley’s 25 points. Victoria Harris came off the bench to score 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Alexa Srolovitz and Jackie Luckhardt chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.
After eight lead changes through the opening 17 minutes, the Chantell Eells gave the Huskies a 27-26 lead and Southern Maine never trailed again.
The closest WestConn would get would be 45-41 after freshman forward Katelyn Fanning buried two free throws with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter.
