Devs, Clark record first victories: River Valley’s head coach notches first head coaching win, as his team records first triumph of the season
MOHAVE VALLEY — The Dust Devils routed the Knights 47-6 at River Valley High School for their first victory of the season and for win No. 1 of head coach Jonathan Clark’s career.
“It’s a great feeling,” Clark said. “My hat goes off to those Gilbert Christian kids.
“There’s only 25 of them, and they were playing hard the whole game.
“Yeah, it’s a wonderful feeling to get that win.”
The Dust Devils are 1-3 overall and are 0-0 in the Arizona Interscholastic Association 3A West Region, and the Knights are 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the AIA 3A Metro Region.
Cole Shott’s 3-yard TD run put River Valley ahead 7-0 with 7:01 left in the first quarter.
Richard Vega’s 6-yard TD run made it 14-0 during the last play of the opening period.
Vega went on to gain 105 yards on 13 carries.
“We finally ran the ball with some enthusiasm,” Clark said. “The offensive line got off the ball a little bit and the running backs were hitting the hole hard, and that’s what we’ve been working on during the past two weeks. You know, our bye week, just being able to run the ball.”
River Valley went on to gain 279 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Seth Christy’s 8-yard TD run made it 20-0 with 11:25 to go in the second quarter.
Vega’s 25-yard TD run made it 26-0 at 6:52.
The Dust Devils continued to run the ball well.
Zach Hammett’s 14-yard TD run made it 33-0 at 5:13.
Hammett went on to gain 75 yards on eight carries.
After the Knights cut their deficit to 33-6 at 3:11, Alex Castillo returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to put the Dust Devils ahead 40-6 at 2:54.
Hammett’s 24-yard TD run with 9:24 left in the third period completed the scoring.
Michael Dulin and the entire right side of the Dust Devils’ offensive line opened holes for him to break into the open field, Hammett said.
Anthony Gorrell amassed three sacks, Brennan Gladeau added two and Shott chipped in with one for the Dust Devils’ swarming defense.
