CHP Reports At Least 15-Car Accident in Fog, Possible Fatal

December 21, 1985

LIVERMORE, Calif. (AP) _ About 15 cars collided in zero-visibility fog on a northern California interstate highway early today, blocking the road and causing at least one serious injury, the highway patrol said.

The chain-reaction crash occurred before dawn on Interstate 580 near Altamont Pass about 45 miles east of San Francisco, a patrol dispatcher said.

Visibility at the time of the accident ″was zero,″ said the dispatcher, who said an ambulance was called and at least one person was hurt seriously.

Westbound traffic was diverted off the freeway onto Altamont Pass Road.

Dense fog was reported in many western valleys and in the Northwest. Travelers’ advisories were issued for the San Francisco Bay and California’s San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys.

The fog forced curtailment of most flights at the Seattle-Tacoma airport in Washington.
