Area students to t-e-s-t their skills at three-county spelling bee

February 7, 2019

DIXON – Learn a new word or two, courtesy of the best grade school spellers in Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties as they take part in the Regional Office of Education No. 47 Spelling Bee at 10 a.m. Feb. 20 at Dixon High School’s Wiltz Auditorium, 300 Lincoln Statue Drive.

“Schadenfreude,” “barukhzy,” and “vamplate” were among the words that challenged spellers in last year’s bee, when Rebekah Zeigler of Polo bested 39 other competitors to win it for the fourth consecutive year. The Aplington Middle School eighth-grader plans to try one more time for the local championship.

The winner receives an all-expense paid trip to National Harbor, Maryland, to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Prizes include Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, Amazon.com gift cards, a 2019 United States Mint Proof Set, an Encyclopedia Britannica online subscription, medals, and pins.
