Downtown Los Angeles commercial fire burns nearly 3 hours
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A huge fire has destroyed a wholesale fabric firm’s building in downtown Los Angles.
The Fire Department says it took 186 firefighters nearly three hours to fully extinguish the blaze early Monday.
Two firefighters were injured and a third suffered exhaustion, but all were expected to be released after hospital treatment.
The fire was reported at 12:10 a.m. in the 10,360-square-foot (962-square-meter) commercial building in the Arts District on the east side of downtown.
By 1 a.m. it was declared a major emergency and firefighters took a defensive posture on the outside of the building as it became structurally unsound.
The Fire Department says adjoining businesses were saved, and an estimate of the dollar loss to the fabric firm is still being determined.
