Debate Team Member Dies in Crash

March 14, 2000

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) _ A pickup crashed into a Rice University van carrying members of the school’s debate team, killing one student and injuring five others.

The Rice Forensics Team, which won last year’s national championship, was returning from a debate and public speaking competition at Omaha, Neb., when the crash happened just before 11 p.m. Monday.

Eleven students and three coaches were in two university vans that encountered a construction zone on Interstate 45, about 30 miles north of Houston, Rice officials and Harris County sheriff’s deputies said.

``The two vans were stopped for the construction, and the pickup truck struck the first van from the rear,″ sheriff’s Sgt. D. Coleman said at the scene.

Freshman Dan Henning of Vernon Hills, Ill., was killed, said Terry Shepard, the university’s vice president for public affairs.

Two students were listed in fair condition at Hermann Hospital in Houston, a hospital spokeswoman said. One had a broken leg and lacerations and the other had a back injury, Shepard said.

Three others were treated at nearby emergency rooms and released.
