‘Rumpelstiltskin’: Tricking the ultimate trickster
“Rumpelstiltskin” is headed to Bridgeport’s Downtown Cabaret Theatre, where it will be performed Saturdays and Sundays, Jan. 12 through Feb. 10.
Remember this classic fairy tale? It begins with a poor miller who tries too hard to seem important when he gets his chance to talk to the queen. When the miller brags that his daughter can spin gold out of straw, the queen orders him to bring her to the castle so she can prove it. She locks her in a room filled with straw, a spinning wheel, and a spindle.
After being told she must complete the task by morning, the girl begins to cry. That’s when a magic troll appears and offers to do the spinning in exchange for a piece of jewelry. The queen is pleased the next day, but greedily tells her to create more gold.
The troll returns again and again, but when the cost of what he asks becomes too high, she must find a way to outwit him. Or as the theater says, she must “play the ultimate trick on the ultimate trickster.”
Children’s shows at the Downtown Cabaret Theatre run approximately 75 to 80 minutes, with a 10-minute intermission.
