CNN Sues Pornography Seller
ATLANTA (AP) _ Cable News Network is suing a company that sells pornography through an Internet address similar to the Atlanta-based network’s.
CNN’s suit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Atlanta against The Net Inc. of Hewlett, N.Y., accuses the company of diluting CNN’s trademark and tarnishing its name. It seeks damages, attorney’s fees and a court order prohibiting The Net from continuing to use CNN’s name.
The suit says The Net’s pornographic site has an address similar to that of CNN Interactive, CNN’s 24-hour news site. The CNN Interactive address is CNN.com. The Net’s site changes the ``.com″ portion of the address but maintains the ``CNN″ portion.
CNN tried to resolve the matter with The Net, but The Net demanded $2,500 to take down its site, the lawsuit says. It says the New York company also has Internet sites with addresses using acronyms for other well-known companies.
Officials at The Net could not be reached for comment. There is no telephone listing for the company in Hewlett, N.Y.
