Free tax preparation available

February 4, 2019

HUNTINGTON — United Way of the River Cities will start its free tax preparation service a little later than usual this tax season, according to an official with the nonprofit organization.

“Getting this season off the ground has been a bit challenging,” said Rachel Houston, VITA program coordinator for United Way of the River Cities. “We had to get a new appointment service, the government shut down delayed the delivery of our materials, all of the tax law changes required additional training, and we are switching some of our sites around.”

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, Houston said.

“We will be up and running on Monday, Feb. 4,” she said.

Houston says the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to low- and moderate-income households, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

“IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals,” she explained.

Houston said free tax preparation is available every day but Sunday for those in Cabell, Lincoln, Mason and Wayne counties.

“This year a brand-new site will be available in the city of Wayne,” she said. “The Wayne County Economic Development Authority office will play host to a tax site on Monday evening from 3:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.”

Additionally, the VITA site located in the Cabell County Public Library in downtown Huntington will not be open this year, according to Houston.

“Instead, there are extended hours at Goodwill on Virginia Avenue in the West End of Huntington,” she said.

The VITA Site at Goodwill will be open Fridays from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the Huntington WV Housing Authority office on 7th Avenue and 3rd Street West in Huntington, between Colonial Lanes and the 1st Street Kroger, will now be host to taxes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Houston stressed that appointments are required. To make an appointment call 1-844-WVCARES (982-2737), unless noted for a specific VITA site location.
