DETROIT (AP) _ Darren McCarty’s late score helped the Detroit Red Wings overcome a two-goal third period deficit and earn a 3-3 tie with the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night.
The point enabled the Blackhawks (40-26-13-1) to clinch their first playoff berth since 1997.
McCarty scored his 100th career goal with 5:01 left, poking in a rebound off a shot by Sergei Fedorov.
Igor Larionov brought the Red Wings within 3-2 with 6:29 left when he shoveled in a cross-crease pass.
The Blackhawks scored twice in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Phil Housley snapped a 1-1 tie just a minute into the period when he slammed a cross-ice pass into the open side of the net from the bottom of the right circle.
With 5:11 left in the period, Steve Thomas’ slap shot from along the left-wing boards got between Dominik Hasek’s blocker arm and his body.
Eric Daze opened the scoring for Chicago with his 37th goal of the season at 11:36 of the first period. His one-timer from the top of the left circle on a 2-on-1 beat Hasek.
But Fedorov tied it 1-1 with 1:09 left in the period when his slap shot from the top of the left circle beat Steve Passmore high on the short side. It was Fedorov’s 30th goal of the season.
Notes: Red Wings’ captain Steve Yzerman returned after missing 19 games because of a knee injury that he aggravated while playing for Canada in the Olympics.
