Scientists: Rogue Wave Caused by Powerful Squall

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Scientists now say weird weather, not an undersea landslide, probably triggered a huge wave that swamped the beach here.

Two teams of researchers believe a powerful and fast-moving squall churned up the ocean between here and Georgia and caused the large wave that crashed ashore late July 3.

About 20 people suffered minor injuries and some cars were damaged, officials said.

Some scientists initially thought the wave was caused by a landslide off the coast, but the evidence pointed to weather, a researcher said Friday.

″The timing of this storm coming south was perfect for when the wave hit Daytona Beach,″ said Jeff List, an oceanographer with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Center for Coastal Geology in St. Petersburg.

List said a landslide powerful enough to cause such a wave would have created a tremor that would have registered on the Geological Survey’s seismic monitoring network.

By studying debris left by the wave, scientists from the University of Florida and the Geological Survey determined it was between 7 and 10 feet high -not 18 feet, as reported by witnesses.
