DeKalb County nonprofit, Arcomusical, receives music education grant

November 29, 2018

SYCAMORE – One DeKalb County music education group was among

24 Chicago region nonprofits and community organizations that received Wurlitzer Foundation Fund grants this fall through the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

A total of $73,300 was awarded to the two dozen groups this fall. Arcomusical, a berimbau musical group with ties to Northern Illinois University, received a $3,000 grant and was the only organization in DeKalb County that received one out of three organizations from the county that applied for money through the Wurlitzer fund.

Anita Zurbrugg, program director for the community foundation, said it’s unusual there was only one county organization funded this fall when a third of awarded money goes to local groups. She said the other two didn’t have the right criteria as music education organizations.

“Over time, we’re hoping more and more applications come in from DeKalb County,” Zurbrugg said.

The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund Grant is one of several grantmaking programs at the DeKalb County Community Foundation. Funding support is possible through a community foundation donor advised fund established by the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation in 2012.

Zurbrugg said the total amount granted for the program last spring was $174,600, with a little more than a fourth going to county organizations.

Zurbrugg said there’s no rhyme or reason as to why there were so few local groups applying this time around, but she said the fund program is a good way for eligible music education programs, such as those in schools, to get a substantial amount of money.

“We encourage more local, eligible nonprofits and government entities to apply,” Zurbrugg said.

The spring 2019 grant applications are available online after Jan. 1. Those applications are due March 1, Zurbrugg said.
