Vikings Sign Bucs’ Yo Murphy
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) _ The Minnesota Vikings have claimed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver and return specialist Yo Murphy off waivers.
Murphy, released by Tampa Bay when the Bucs signed quarterback Scott Milanovich, returns to the Vikings after a stint on the practice squad in 1997 and participating in training camp in 1997 and 1998.
The Vikings were looking for a return man after David Palmer was sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury Nov. 8.
Murphy, 28, returned 14 kickoffs for the Bucs this season, averaging 21.9 yards per return. He did not return punts for Tampa Bay, but Vikings special teams coach Gary Zauner said Murphy should return punts and kicks for Minnesota.
``From what I’ve seen, I’m pretty sure he’s going to be our return guy,″ Zauner said.
The Vikings play at Tampa Bay on Monday night in a battle between teams tied atop the NFC Central along with Detroit at 7-4.
To make room for Murphy, the Vikings placed center Cory Withrow on the practice squad and waived linebacker Mike Parker from the practice squad.
