October 25, 1997

ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) _ Rapheal Fuller passed for 104 yards and Mississippi Valley State held Texas Southern to just 97 passing yards as the Delta Devils held off the Braves, 13-10.

Valley (2-5, 1-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) scored all their points in the second period. It was enough for the victory despite two interceptions on Raphael and 16 penalties for 181 yards.

Texas Southern (3-5, 3-3) got on the board in the first quarter with Ramon Rivera’s 48-yard field goal which capped an 8-play, 52-yard drive.

In the second quarter, Valley muscled in with Melvin Williams’ 2-yard run. After Cliff Dubose missed on the point-after, Valley scored again, this time when Fuller hit Akim Richmond with a 9-yard TD pass. Dubose’s kick was good.

Texas Southern made it 13-10 with Jarrett Harper’s 9-yard touchdown pass to David Herring with 8:45 remaining in the game.

Valley, whose season began with goals of a SWAC championship, would now settle for a break-even record. They have to win their last three games to go 5-5.

The Delta Devils finally got on the winning side last weekend with a 17-14 victory over Lane that broke their season-opening five-game losing streak.

Texas Southern snapped a four-game losing streak with its 10-7 victory over Alcorn State last weekend.
