Veteran firefighter dies in Maine traffic crash
HOLLIS, Maine (AP) — Police say an off-duty Maine firefighter died in a two-car crash caused when he apparently fell asleep while driving.
Forty-six-year-old Harry Weymouth of Buxton died early Thursday in Hollis. He was a 21-year veteran of the South Portland Fire Department, where he was a lieutenant, and a volunteer with the Buxton Fire Department.
Police say Weymouth was alone in the car on Route 202 when he crossed a centerline and struck another car that was operated by 45-year-old Zahra Guedi of Portland. Guedi and a passenger were treated and released for injuries that were not life-threatening. Police say speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.
South Portland Fire Department Captain Robb Couture says Weymouth’s death brings “deep sadness” to the department. Weymouth also was a registered nurse.
