Five Students Plead Innocent
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) _ Five students pleaded innocent Monday to charges stemming from a racial brawl that injured at least 10 people at the University of Massachusetts following the final game of last fall’s World Series.
A sixth student who is expected to be charged in connection with the fight between black New York Mets fans and white Boston Red Sox supporters will be arraigned May 26 because of conflicts in his attorney’s schedule, said officials at Hampshire District Court.
The six white students were accused of beating a black student, Yancey Robinson, 19, of Springfield, during the Oct. 27 melee that involved up to 2,000 students.
The charges resulted from a month-long investigation by state police detectives Timothy Sicard and Wes McCravey, assigned to the district attorney’s office.
That investigation and a report by a member of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination found that race was a primary factor in the incident.
Pretrial conferences were scheduled for the five defendants for May 26.
