Woman Sold 10-Year-Old’s Sexual Favors, Police Say
STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A woman earned money to buy crack by holding down a 10-year-old girl while a school bus driver sexually assaulted her, police said.
Dorothea Tate, a 35-year-old mother of six, was jailed Wednesday along with the driver, Eugene Howard, 48, on $50,000 bail each, police said.
″Tate was profiting from the 10-year-old,″ said Lt. Frank Lagan. ″She was the pimp.″
Lagan declined to describe Tate’s relationship to the girl, except to say they knew each other previously. He also refused to say when or where the crimes took place and how much Howard allegedly paid Tate.
Tate was charged with sexual assault, promoting prostitution and risking injury to a minor. Howard, who was previously convicted of indecent exposure, was charged with sexual assault and risking injury to a minor.
Howard’s criminal record came as a shock to some parents and school officials.
″If he has a previous incident with police he shouldn’t be involved with children,″ said Lynn Holdt, president of the parents group at an elementary school in Darien whose students were driven by Howard. ″I know it’s difficult to hire bus drivers but that’s no excuse.″
Darien Superintendent of Schools James Loughran said the school system was reviewing the incident with Laidlaw Transit Co., Howard’s employer.
