John Gillispie: ‘Ocean’s 8’ delivers plenty of star power

September 28, 2018

Movies & More reviewer John Gillispie shares his thoughts on “Ocean’s 8,” which is rated PG-13 and available on DVD.

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney’s character in “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen”), has spent more than five years in prison perfecting her plan to pull off a major jewelry theft in “Ocean’s 8.”

After meeting up with partner Lou (Cate Blanchett), Debbie begins recruiting other members for the team who she needs to swipe several millions of dollars in jewels during the Met Gala.

Debbie’s plan includes manipulating popular actress Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) into hiring fashion designer Rose Weil (Helena Bonham Carter), who is in on the plan. Once Daphne chooses Rose to design her Gala gown, the objective is to have a famous jewelry company loan a diamond necklace worth $150 million for Daphne to wear during the prestigious event. A copy of the necklace has been created to switch with the real thing.

Others helping with Debbie’s plan are computer hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna); expert pickpocket Constance (Awkwafina); Tammy (Sarah Paulson), who knows how to fence stolen goods; and jewelry pro Amita (Mindy Kaling). I enjoyed seeing all these talented actresses in one movie and watching as their plan came to life with some improvising along the way. Debbie also has a couple of other schemes happening at the same time, and they are explained as the film goes along. Another enjoyable aspect to the film was seeing celebrity cameo roles from Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Katie Holmes, among others.

I found “Ocean’s 8” entertaining, but it’s not a movie I would go out of my way to watch again, which makes me wonder if the roles should have been developed a little bit more. Or perhaps, it is difficult to empathize with characters committing a crime.

John Gillispie is the public relations director for the Huntington Museum of Art.
