Two Craven team members facing sexual assault charges
GUELPH, Ontario (AP) _ The crew chief for NASCAR driver Ricky Craven and another employee are facing sexual assault charges.
Kevin Caldwell, 34, of Mooresville, N.C., and Josh Gibson, 22, of Huntersville, N.C., are accused of assaulting a 34-year-old Barre woman at a Guelph motel Saturday morning. They were arrested Sunday at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, and charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm.
The woman told police she had seen the men at a wedding reception Friday night in Kitchener.
She said she was in her car outside the motel after an argument with her husband when she was approached by the men a few hours after the reception. She said she went with them to their room, where she was held down by one while the other had intercourse with her.
The woman got out of the room and returned to her husband, who called police.
The case was adjourned Tuesday after acting Crown attorney Terry Steenson told the court that police needed more time to complete their investigation. He said police are still trying to interview witnesses who have returned to North Carolina.
Caldwell, crew chief for Craven’s Busch Series team, will return to court Friday. Gibson will be back in court Wednesday.
Rick Blackburn, a spokesman for Ricky Craven Motorsports, declined comment Tuesday.
Craven was 1995 rookie of the year on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit. He drives there for Hendrick Motorsports, but owns his own car in the Busch Series.
