Summit Food Coalition rolls out food guide to help residents buy directly from local farms

AKRON, Ohio – Buying food directly from local farms just got a little easier thanks to the Summit Food Coalition’s newly released Local Food Guide.

The coalition also is hosting its first Local Food Advocacy Day on Tuesday to celebrate the launch of the food guide and the local food conversations happening in the county.

The Summit Food Coalition is asking people to participate in Local Food Advocacy Day by:

The guide aligns with the food coalition’s goal of building a sustainable and flourishing local food system in Summit County. It includes listings for farmers markets, farm stands and farms where people can pick their own produce.

“Over the past 20 years, the chorus of voices encouraging individuals, restaurants, and large institutions to buy local has grown at a remarkable rate,” said coalition Director Beth Knorr in a news release. “These changes are encouraging, and after considering ways the coalition could support the continued growth of the area markets and farms, a Local Food Guide emerged as the best tool to get useful information into residents’ hands. We’re fortunate to have so many options within such close proximity, but many community members don’t know they exist.”

The guide is available at farmers markets, the Farmer’s Rail, Akron Coffee Roasters, Akron-Summit County Public Library and on the Summit Food Coalition website.
