HARTFORD, Vt. (AP) — A 19-year-old man injured in a shooting involving a Vermont state trooper has pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated domestic assault, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.

Police said they responded to a call of a domestic assault with a shotgun fired Sunday night. Officers said they found James Luce, of Quechee, armed with a shotgun walking near the home.

In an encounter with troopers, police said Luce refused to comply and a trooper fired at him once. A stun gun also was used.

Luce’s attorney, Nikki Smith, said Luce has no prior criminal record. She said he has a history of mental health issues. Luce was held without bail.

Trooper Eric Vitali was placed on paid administrative leave.
