PACIFIC WALRUS-DISAPPEARING ICE

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Given a choice between land and sea ice, a Pacific walrus mother will choose ice every time. She mates, gives birth and nurses on ice, even when land is available. Trouble is, as the century progresses, there’s going to be far less ice around. How well walruses cope with less sea ice — and perhaps none in future summers — is at the heart of a debate about on whether the these icons of the Arctic should be listed as a threatened species, giving them an added layer of protection against human encroachments.
