Prosecutors: Gunman and Detainee One and Same

August 25, 1995

MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Dismissing speculation about a case of mistaken identity, the attorney general’s office on Thursday said the assassin of a presidential candidate last year is indeed in custody.

There has been considerable debate about whether the confessed killer, Mario Aburto Martinez, 23, is the same person as a detainee in a high-security prison west of Mexico City.

Luis Donaldo Colosio, of the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, was assassinated as he campaigned in a poor suburb of Tijuana on March 23, 1994.

Arturo German, the case coordinator for the attorney general, distributed documents to reporters that he said proved that the gunman and the man in prison are one and the same.

A few months ago, Mexican newspapers published photographs raising doubts about the suspect’s identity.

The man authorities identify as Aburto Martinez is serving a 45-year sentence.

An investigation into who masterminded the assassination plot is continuing.
