ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) _ Guinea was banned from the qualifying rounds of the 2002 World Cup because of government interference in the national soccer association.

FIFA said Guinea authorities had failed to change a Jan. 28 ruling that eliminated the executive body of the soccer association. The world federation had set a deadline of Sunday for reinstatement.

The government decision was made the same day as Guinea's 1-1 tie with Malawi and a week after a 0-0 tie against Togo.

Guinea has been suspended since March 2, the day after a previous deadline expired. The suspension meant Guinea was barred from the final of the African under-17 championships.
