LHS Quiz Bowl team heading to state championships

March 20, 2019

The Ludington High School Quiz Bowl team will be going to the state Quiz Bowl championship in East Lansing on April 12 and 13.

Ludington will participate in Class B, and will be competing against 24 other schools, according to Amber Nasson, Quiz Bowl coach and high school civics, economics, psychology and world history teacher.

Ludington is part of the Lake 8 Conference that competes from January until March, Nasson said. The winner of the league goes to the state championship. Ludington and Manistee tied in the conference and will both be competing at state.

“We are extremely competitive and hoping to beat (Manistee),” said Garret Hanson, captain of the Quiz Bowl team, referring to the state competition.

Hanson has been with the team since he was a freshman.

“Last year we got third in state. This year it would be great to get second in state,” Hanson said.

Before heading off to state, the team will host a trivia night fundraiser on Saturday, April 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the high school gym. The event helps raise money for equipment, and last year there were 10 teams that competed.

“The high school has been very supportive,” Nasson said, adding that the school has paid for lodging and bussing.

Ludington’s team has 48 members. There are 16 people on the varsity team, which includes all seniors, and then two junior varsity teams consisting of freshman, sophomores and juniors, with 16 players on each team, said Nasson.

Nasson has been coaching varsity Quiz Bowl for 10 years. She got interested in coaching because she was good at trivia, it seemed like a good fit and she was interested in extracurricular activities, she said.

LHS recently competed on the Central Michigan University TV show, “Quiz Central.” Sixty schools participated in the academic quiz show, said Nasson.

The “Quiz Central” competitions featuring the Ludington High School Quiz Bowl team will be broadcast on local PBS station WMCU in April and June. Ludington versus Frankenmuth will be aired April 13 at 5:30 p.m. Ludington versus Manistee will be aired June 1 at 5:30 p.m. On June 12 at 7:30 p.m., Ludington versus White Cloud will be aired, and on June 19 at 7:30 p.m. is Ludington versus Traverse City Central, said Nasson.

“At CMU Quiz Central, Ludington won (the) Class B division and lost (by) 20 points to Traverse City Central, (which is) Class A,” Nasson said.

Quiz Bowl has always been a place where kids who don’t want to participate in sports or the arts and have knowledge of random things can fit in, according to Hanson. Quiz Bowl has no cuts — anyone who wants to participate is welcomed — and it’s a unique culture to be a part of, according to Nasson. The team has money to pay for registrations, equipment and team outfits if the student isn’t able to afford the costs.

“I like spending time with the team and encouraging them,” said Sophia Powers, a senior on the Quiz Bowl team.

Nasson is very proud of the Quiz Bowl students, she said.

“It’s fun to be smart and celebrate that opportunity to be Orioles,” Nasson said.
