WVC SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Mendrzycki Leads Royals To Opening Win

Holy Redeemer had a successful season opener at home.

Liz Mendrzycki threw a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts to lead the Royals over Lake-Lehman, 10-0.

Offensively, Lynzie Skoronski doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs. McKenna Dolan also had two singles and a double with one RBI.

Allyson Laiuvara, Taylor Josefowicz and Jenna Santuk also drove in runs.

Only three games into its season, Hazleton Area pulled off its second walk-off win.

Trailing Tunkhannock at home, 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars scored three times in the frame to pull off the win.

Gianna Gombeda tied the game with an RBI single setting up Madison Mizenko’s game-winning hit.

Olivia Wolk added three hits with a home run for Hazleton Area (3-0).

Faith Jones drove in two runs for Tunkhannock.

At Wyoming Area, Kari Melberger hit a two-run double as part of the Warriors’ six-run fifth inning in a come-from-behind win to open league play.

Melberger went 3 for 4 and added a home run, as well. Jess Skladzien, Bri Pizzano, Tinsley Sarnak and Megan Askew added two hits apiece for Wyoming Area.

Skladzien pitched four shutout innings of relief and earned the win.

Nanticoke Area’s Katie King hit a solo home run. Jilann Baron and Olivia Nice had two hits each.

At Valley West, Pittston Area spotted the hosts a quick 1-0 lead but soon took control. Four runs in the third gave the Patriots the lead and eight in the fifth helped bring an early end to the game.

Alexa McHugh got the win in the circle striking out nine in four innings. She helped her own cause with a home run and triple at the plate, driving in three runs.

Morgan Mesaris also drove in two for Pittston Area (5-0). Gabby Para, Tori Para and Madisyn Antal each had two hits.

Aubrey Duesler and Gabriella Williams had RBIs for Valley West.
