Zipwhip Appoints Telecommunications Industry Veterans Alison Billings and Paul Wheeler to Executive Team

January 3, 2019

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan 3, 2019--Zipwhip, the leading provider of texting for business, today announced the appointment of two new members to its executive team. Alison Billings will take the role of vice president of industry development, U.S. to lead Zipwhip’s American partnership strategies, while Paul Wheeler will lead its Canadian carrier and partnership strategies as vice president of industry development, Canada. These appointments come at a time when Zipwhip is experiencing rapid revenue and employee growth and expanding its footprint as the preeminent provider of texting for business in North America.

Billings and Wheeler bring a combined 40 years of leadership experience guiding partner relations at various telecommunications and technology companies. Billings and Wheeler will drive strategic partner initiatives from within Zipwhip, ranging from wireless platform providers, large multiplatform technology companies and wireless industry regulatory bodies.

“Both the American and Canadian telecom industries recognize Alison and Paul as thoughtful leaders who understand how to build a healthy and scalable texting ecosystem,” said John Larson, Zipwhip Co-Founder and Chief Business Development Officer. “They will help ensure business texting is steered appropriately at an industry level, and also help Zipwhip maintain its strategic place at the leading edge of innovation and growth.”

Billings is an industry thought leader who has worked throughout her career to drive innovation in emerging industries by fostering individual business success in a free market environment. Before joining Zipwhip, Billings was at T-Mobile for 10 years; most recently in corporate strategy where she oversaw the company’s strategic partnership with Google. Prior to that, Billings was in product management where she ran the third-party platforms business, including third-party messaging, mobile payments, location based services and search.

“I worked with Zipwhip throughout my tenure at T-Mobile and was always impressed with their clarity of vision, innovative spirit and technical acumen,” said Billings. “Their ability to take the most basic of wireless communications – the text message – and create an entirely new industry is incredible. Having the opportunity to join Zipwhip and advance its vision by cultivating and deepening industry relationships was an easy decision for me to make.”

Wheeler is a 15-year veteran in the Canadian wireless industry, most recently serving as vice president of client services at Impact Mobile and chief operating officer of Full Spectrum Telecommunications prior to that. Wheeler has also successfully built and sold two separate digital engagement startups, Max Interactive Media and Smart App Mobile. Wheeler has served as chairman of the Mobile Content Council of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association since January 2017 – a position he was elected to by his industry peers.

“Zipwhip is uniquely positioned to usher in the next decade of business messaging in a way that protects the integrity of the messaging ecosystem while at the same time promoting growth and allowing all channel partners to benefit,” said Wheeler. “The rest of the Zipwhip team and I are completely aligned on how to build and maintain a successful messaging ecosystem and it is motivating to work with people that genuinely care about the wellbeing of the industry they work in.”

These appointments cap off a groundbreaking 2018 for Zipwhip, which included the launch of RCS (Rich Communication Services) on the Sacramento Kings’ toll-free phone number, marking the first business to RCS-enable an existing phone line.
