Death toll rises to 10 in Mexico gas tanker explosion
MEXICO CITY (AP) — The death toll from the explosion of a crashed gasoline tanker truck in southern Mexico rose to 10 on Monday.
The Tabasco state prosecutor’s office said on its Twitter account Monday that a 10th person had died.
It reported on its official Facebook page on Sunday that the death toll was at nine after five more people had died. The number of deaths stood at four on Saturday.
Among the dead are a girl and two boys.
The Civil Defense agency had said in a statement that the 15,800-gallon (60, 000-liter) tanker crashed on the road between Villahermosa and Coatzacoalcos in southeastern Mexico on Thursday. Area residents ignored authorities’ warnings to stay away and instead tried to take gas from the damaged tanker and many suffered serious burns when it exploded.
In addition to those killed, more than 20 others were injured.
