Kafelnikov Advances at Marseille
MARSEILLE, France (AP) _ Yevgeni Kafelnikov is known for losing concentration. A set can slip away in a flash. A match can go the same way.
On Wednesday, he lost the first set but recovered to beat Gianluca Pozzi 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the $500,000 Marseille Open.
``I had a problem adapting,″ the Russian said. ``After coming back from Australia, I played in Davis Cup in Moscow where the surface was much quicker than here. Today it took me about 30 minutes to get into the match.″
Kafelnikov will play Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.
In a second-round match, Goran Ivanisevic blew away second-seeded Thomas Enquist 6-4, 6-3 to gain a quarterfinal berth against the winner of the Arnaud Clement-Marc Rosset clash.
Clement, seeded eighth, beat Germany’s Axel Pretzsch 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 to advance opposite the big-serving Rosset.
Seventh-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden moved into the second round with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Swiss Davis Cup player George Bastl. Johansson meets another Swiss player, Roger Federer, in the next round.
Federer came through with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over French qualifier Anthony Dupuis.
Sebastien Grosjean, seeded fourth, got the better of countryman Arnaud Di Pasquale 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 for a spot opposite qualifier Lionel Roux of France.
