Washington Asks Mexico About Renting Jail Space
SEATTLE (AP) _ A state prison official wants to rent jail cells in Mexico to lock up illegal aliens who are convicted in Washington of dealing drugs.
Joseph Lehman, deputy secretary of corrections, proposed the idea last month in a letter to Enrique Loaeza, Mexico’s consul general in San Francisco.
Loaeza forwarded the request to his government, which has not replied.
Lehman said illegal aliens from Mexico who are convicted in Washington of drug dealing and other crimes could be jailed more cheaply in Mexico.
Dick Milne, Gov. Booth Gardner’s press secretary, said Gardner knows about Lehman’s effort. He called it an ″interesting idea″ but would not comment further.
