Root of issues must be addressed before anything can be fixed

February 14, 2019

This letter is in response to a recent op-ed by Chris Powell, “Ammunition, vaping bills distract from public health.” (The News-Times, Feb. 12)

Guns are becoming a serious issue, yet it is still not taken seriously. By passing more laws and distracting us from real issues, people are going to continue on this downward spiral and nobody will see it happen. People are killed by the pull of a trigger and the gun is not the cause, it’s mental health and upbringing; ignoring the lower class doesn’t make them go away.

You are right about this backwards method we have of trying to fix things because clearly nothing is working. As long as people are kept ignorant about the root of their issues, they won’t be fixed. We cannot stop ignoring and must start coming together to fix our actual issues.

We can legalize marijuana and ban as many vaping flavors as we want, but that won’t make any difference in what really matters.
