Trooper Shoots Trucker In Head After 65-Mile Chase

July 5, 1988

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ A truck driver ran through a tollgate and tried to ram several patrol cars during a 65-mile chase on Interstate 70 before a trooper shot him in the head, authorities said.

David W. Cole, 28, of Providence, Ky., was in critical condition today. No one else was injured, said Trooper Janet Trammell.

Officials in Kansas, where the chase began, said Cole had been clocked speeding in his empty tractor-trailer.

″The truck weaved from shoulder to shoulder and on several occasions tried to strike the patrol cars,″ said Trammell.

Cole drove through a roadblock at about 60 mph, Trammell said. Police then fired at the truck and hit a left rear tire. Cole still refused to stop, she said. A few miles away, a trooper shot Cole in the head, Trammell said.

Cole’s brother, a passenger, pulled the vehicle off the road and stopped.
