Continued drop in PC shipments slows

April 9, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) — Worldwide shipments of PCs continued to drop during the first quarter of this year, but the decline wasn’t as dramatic as in recent periods and could be a sign that the global slump in PC demand is easing.

Market research firm Gartner Inc. says shipments fell 2 percent to 76.6 million units in the first three months of 2014. In comparison shipments fell 7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Gartner says the recent quarter’s numbers were helped by Microsoft Corp.’s ending of support for Windows XP, which prompted upgrades.

Lenovo shipped the most PCs. Its market share increased 2 percentage points to 17 percent.

U.S. shipments rose 2 percent to 14.1 million, with Hewlett-Packard Co. shipping the most. But its market share was flat at 25 percent.
