Roger J. Schaefer, 90, of Watertown, passed away on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, at Marquardt Health Center.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at Hafemeister Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Bezanson officiating. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Innichment will take place at Glenview Memorial Gardens in Ixonia. Roger John Schaefer was born to Merville and Anna (nee Roth) Schaefer on July 17, 1928, in Milford. He grew up in the Milford area as a boy and teen. He was married to Helen Rose on Nov. 20, 1948. They had four children, Larry, Susan, Gary and Barbara.

In his early life after marriage, Roger bought a farm in Grelton, and worked it for about three years. He worked for Culligan Water Softener in the late 1950s. Roger later found the art of selling vehicles. He worked almost his entire life selling automobiles around Watertown. Some of the dealerships Roger worked at include: Voss Motors, Don Grinwald, Pfister Pontiac and Ruby Chevrolet in Milwaukee. He then started selling cemetery plots around Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Sheboygan. He finished his working career at Kayser in Watertown, where he ran parts and did vehicle trades. Due to poor health, Roger became a resident at Marquardt Health Center in February 2011.

Roger and Helen enjoyed traveling, playing bingo and going to dealer trades. He liked to play cards, mainly sheepshead.

He is survived by his children, Larry and Mary (nee Koshnick) Schaefer of Eagle River and their boys, Scott and Renee Pompe, Troy, Tyler, Susan Wells of Beloit and her children Angie and Alyssia, Gary and Jean (nee Ehrlinger) of Janesville, and Briannah, Barbara and Terry Schwefel of Watertown. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Helen Rose; brother-in-law, Ken Rose of North Carolina; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Rose of Clinton, Iowa.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, of 57 years; his parents; Helen’s parents, Herman and Alma (Zimdars) from Lebanon; his sister Virginia Ihde; siblings-in-law, Gertrude Zubke and Lenhard, Norma Dobrick, Lorraine Rose, Irene Hinzmann and Howard, Pearl Froelich and Roland, Melvin Rose, Lester Rose, Mike Rose.

The family would like to thank Marquardt Health Center and the hospice staff.
