Mets’ White Placed on Disabled List

May 1, 2001

NEW YORK (AP) _ The New York Mets placed reliever Rick White on the 15-day disabled Tuesday because of a strained right rotator cuff.

White injured the shoulder during a two-inning stint Monday night in the Mets’ 8-2 victory over the Houston Astros.

``It’s an acute strain, like a pulled hamstring,″ general manager Steve Phillips said. ``It isn’t a wear-and-tear thing, and shouldn’t linger on.″

The Mets recalled right-hander Jerrod Riggan from Triple-A Norfolk to take White’s roster spot. On Monday, Riggan was optioned to Norfolk to open a spot for Dicky Gonzalez, Wednesday night’s starter against Houston.

Riggan traveled to Norfolk on Tuesday morning before getting the call to return to New York.

``Guys don’t complain about those calls,″ Phillips said.

White allowed two hits and a run Monday night. He has 3.38 ERA in four appearances this season.
