Brazil police detain 42 after fight between rival fan groups
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian police have detained 42 Corinthians fans after they allegedly attacked a group of Sao Paulo supporters inside a subway station.
The Sao Paulo fans were heading to a match at Pacaembu Stadium, while Corinthians supporters were returning from the team’s presidential elections.
Authorities said the Sao Paulo fans were outnumbered but were able to flee. There were no reports of serious injuries.
Saturday’s fight happened a day after authorities reversed a decision to keep Corinthians fans from attending Sunday’s match at rival Palmeiras. The local federation had initially banned them because of safety reasons, but Corinthians threatened not to play without its fans.
A 16-year-old Novo Hamburgo fan was killed earlier this month in a fight between rival groups and police.
