Sir Fred Warner, Retired Diplomat, Dead at 77

LONDON (AP) _ Sir Frederick Warner, a former ambassador to Laos and Japan, has died at age 77.

Warned died Saturday, his family said. The cause of death was not announced.

He joined the diplomatic service in 1946, and was posted to Moscow, Burma, and Greece before being appointed ambassador to Laos in 1965.

He was appointed deputy permanent representative to the United Nations in 1969, then ambassador to Japan in 1972, continuing in that assignment until his retirement in 1975.

In 1979, Warner was elected as a Conservative Party member of the European Parliament, serving until 1984.

He is survived by his wife Simone, two sons and a stepdaughter. Funeral arrangements were not announced.
