Officials issue apology for bridge backup
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island officials have issued an apology for a bridge backup that delayed motorists for up to 2 ½ hours during the evening commute.
The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority says it will no longer do a 24-hour lane closure on the Newport Pell Bridge after Tuesday’s traffic jam.
Now, both lanes will remain open between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
The lane closure was put in place for the final stage of concrete safety walk renovations on the north side of the bridge.
The authority says rain has delayed the pouring of concrete, so the contractor is now racing to finish before the 2018 construction season ends.
